Robert "Shoofly" Shufelt

Shoofly’s drawings are the result of 45 years in the saddle, working diligently as a cowboy enabling his soul to absorb “The Cowboy Way”. With consummate technique both dramatic and subtle, his art crystallizes the world of today’s ranching – its isolation and its camaraderie, its action and its stillness. The artist’s subjects live in an intensified world of light, shadow, and texture far beyond realism, yet so clearly defined, they make color seem a distraction.

Drawings that are the realization of a man who has ridden out, eaten dust, scraped off every inch of himself that wasn’t covered with leather, come in sweaty and aching, and gone back for more. Pure and powerful, an artist’s vision of cowboys as they could only be around another cowboy, neither posed nor idealistic. His art manifests the celebrations of a dreamer who has lived his cowboy dream, without the aide of artistic coalition, but rather through individual achievement.

Shoofly’s work hangs in prestigious collections and museums, and is featured on covers and articles for major western art and ranching publications, as well as national network television documentaries. The artist has successfully written and published three books and produced numerous award winning lithographs over the past 35 years. His drawings were honored in 2005 by the Prix de West’s, American Cowboy Award at the at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The artist shows his work at The Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, Bozeman and Jackson Hole and exhibits at the Phoenix Art Museum’s West Select Show and Tucson's Mountain Oyster Club .
